Congress Interested in Allergy Research and Treatment

The AAAAI has been advocating greater attention to biomedical and health services research aimed at improving the treatment of allergic diseases. The House and Senate have responded with initiatives in several areas:

• In its FY 2014 bill report, the Senate Appropriations Committee noted “…a critical need for better tools to predict patient drug allergies and for improved drug desensitization protocols.”  The Committee encouraged the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to consider a multi-Institute, multidisciplinary collaborative effort in this area.

• Representative Nita Lowey, the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, sent a letter to NIH Director Francis Collins to encourage more research on eosinophil-related diseases.

• The report accompanying the FY 2014 Omnibus Appropriations Bill included language encouraging the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to include food allergies as a focus of the agency’s disease management pilot programs.

The AAAAI continues its efforts to heighten Congressional awareness of the increasing prevalence and high cost of asthma and allergic diseases.
