AAAAI Environmental Health Equity Research Grants
Environmental health is concerned with all aspects of natural and built environments affecting human health. Access to healthcare, healthy lifestyles including nutrition and exercise, clean air, stable climate, adequate water, sanitation and hygiene, safe use of chemicals, protection from radiation, healthy and safe homes and workplaces, sound agricultural practices, health-supportive cities and built environments and a preserved nature (greenspace) are all prerequisites for good health.
Volunteerism is a mechanism for helping the community we serve in a meaningful and selfless manner. A recent AAAAI member survey on volunteerism revealed overwhelming enthusiasm for volunteer opportunities within AAAAI for our members with an interest in community engagement to address environmental disparities in underserved populations.
This funding opportunity is designed to support clinical allergists in the community or in academic centers with interests in volunteerism with a focus on community engagement in the conduct of projects advancing environmental health equity for populations with allergic and immunologic diseases. Projects can be ongoing or new, related to a broad number of topics such as indoor and outdoor air pollution interventions, housing disparities, obesity/nutrition and access to health care. Priority will be given to projects where the clinical allergist / immunologist has volunteerism experience with community involvement that can facilitate direct interaction between volunteers and individuals living in the designated community so long-term sustainable relationships can be developed.
Funding
Two, 2-year awards will be provided for direct costs up to $55,000/year plus an additional $5,000/year if projects have a committed community organization partnership with a letter of support.
Award Term
January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026
Funds may not be used for institutional indirect costs.
Eligibility
• The Principal Investigator must be board certified (BC) or board eligible (BE) in allergy / immunology by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) or hold the equivalent certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
• Fellows-in-Training and applicants with PhD and/or MPH degrees are encouraged to apply with the mentorship of a BE/BC allergist / immunologist.
• Applicants must reside in the US or Canada
• Applicants must be a member in good standing of the AAAAI at the time of application and throughout the award term
