Neosporin contact dermatitis

Question:

7/16/2020
I have a patient with contact dermatitis reaction to Neosporin. She was recently prescribed Glucosamine Sulfate for her knee arthritis. Both Neosporin and Glucosamine Sulfate have the word "sulfate" included. She has never had sulfa and I could test her for sulfa, but is that necessary?

Answer:

Contact dermatitis to Neosporin is quite common and typically due to Neomycin which a very common cause of contact allergy. There should be no reason to "test" for sulfa allergy in this patient.

I hope this is helpful.
