No issue with statins and shellfish allergy

Question:

6/1/2017
A local provider's EMR keeps popping up a warning about giving any statin to a patient who has shellfish allergy. He has a documented anaphylaxis history with shellfish ingestion. I will be consulting with him but have you found any contraindications for giving a person with fish or shellfish allergy a statin?

Answer:

Thank you for your question. I am not aware of any issue with using statins in patients with a shellfish allergy. Further, I performed a Pubmed search and was unable to find anything relating statins and shellfish allergy. Hope this information is helpful to you.

Daniel Jackson, MD
