Patient reported atopic dermatitis scoring system

Question:

2/6/2017
As medicine moves to quality based reporting, I am curious if allergy or dermatology has a newer validated yet simple scoring system to allow our Atopic Dermatitis patients/parents answer prior to or during medical visits. I am somewhat familiar with SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD), Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), and six area, six sign AD (SASAD), but wonder about anything else available in 2017.

Answer:

I asked Dr. Donald Leung at National Jewish Health to address your inquiry. He provided the reference below (Eichenfeld et al) which discusses a variety of scoring tools for atopic dermatitis. Each of the tools you mention in your question are discussed. In general, these tools have been developed for use in clinical trials and have not typically been used frequently in clinical practice. While some include patient reported outcomes (e.g. SCORAD and POEM) either separate or in addition to provider assessments, the guideline does not identify a gold standard. In summary, I was unable to identify a simple, validated patient/parent reported scoring system for your practice, but this guideline document has useful information to assess the characteristics of currently available AD scoring tools.

I hope this is helpful to you.
