Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis (FPIAP) Defined
Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis (FPIAP), is a condition causing inflammation and rectal bleeding in young infants. Much like other food allergies, FPIAP allergic reactions are triggered by ingesting a food allergen. Unlike a typical food allergy, FPIAP allergic reactions may be delayed, occurring within hours after eating the trigger allergen. FPIAP often develops in infancy, sometimes while being breastfed, or when a baby is introduced to formula. Dietary changes for the baby (and for the mother if breastfeeding) are usually necessary to resolve the child’s symptoms.
