Major Goals of Training Program
Our program offers to board certified/eligible medicine or pediatric trainees, expertise in the clinical management and translational research of allergic and immunological diseases both in adults and children. The two-year program consists of rotations in a busy academic allergy and immunology practice, a large private allergy practice and in-hospital consult services at Albany Medical Center, the leading academic hospital in Northeastern New York. Electives are available in pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases and HIV medicine. A continuous 6 month rotation in clinical or translational research in food allergy, asthma or allergic inflammation is an integral part of the program. Trainees are required to complete a research project before graduation, suitable to be presented at a national meeting and/or published in a peer-reviewed journal. Those who are seriously considering an academic career may elect to do a third year of training dedicated mainly to research leading to a junior faculty training/developing investigator grant.

Major Goals of Training Program
The goals of the University of Rochester Allergy and Immunology Fellowship are to provide the trainee with the skills, experience, information, and attitudes which will allow him or her to become a skilled clinician and clinical scientist in Allergy and Clinical Immunology. We prepare trainees to function as a subspecialist in primary, secondary, and tertiary care of patients with diseases involving the immunologic system; to enable the trainee to pass these skills on to others via teaching; and to enable the trainee to appreciate, interpret and perform research in Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

The Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at the University of Rochester is a collaborative program of the Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology Division in the Department of Medicine and the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Division in the Department of Pediatrics. Since the inception of the program in 1961 we have had 1-2 graduates trained in both Allergy and Immunology each year. Our faculty, staff, and fellows are committed to carrying on a long tradition of excellence in patient care, medical research, and education. We provide timely, comprehensive, individualized, state-of-the-art medical care to patients with allergic diseases, primary and secondary immune deficiencies, and autoimmune disorders. Our innovative research programs seek to:  1.) Understand factors that lead to the development of atopic dermatitis, food allergy and other atopic diseases and their prevention. 2.) Expand our understanding of the psychosocial issues in food allergy and develop useful interventions. 3.) Advance programs aimed at eliminating disparities in health care access and outcomes. 4) Understand basic mechanisms of underlying inflammatory, allergic, and autoimmune disorders. 5.) Develop more effective, less toxic, and more cost-effective therapies and therapeutic strategies for allergic and immunologic disorders. We are also committed to educating the next generation of clinicians and researchers.

Our clinical and research faculty members ensure that fellows in the program receive the highest caliber training and are prepared for multiple career paths including clinical practice, teaching, and research. Educational opportunities for fellows are quite diverse given our collaboration and joint patient care endeavors with multiple departments within the Medical Center including Medicine, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Otolaryngology, and others. These relationships afford fellows not only a more varied clinical experience, but additional research opportunities as well.

Major Goals of Training Program

  1. The goal of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Allergy and Immunology Fellowship training program is to generate medical experts in the field of allergy and immunology who can practice independently in the academic and clinical settings by becoming proficient in the six ACGME competencies (professionalism, patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interprofessional and communication skills and systems-based practice).

Our 2-year program trains fellows in both clinical and basic science application of allergy and immunology. Fellows acquire the clinical skills necessary to identify and treat pediatric and adult patients with atopic diseases and primary and secondary immunodeficiencies in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. A well-balanced education includes the acquisition of knowledge and skills in our allergy clinic, asthma center, drug allergy center, food allergy center, diagnostic center for primary immunodeficiencies, and our center for young adult, adolescent and pediatric HIV. Fellows are also expected to demonstrate proficiency in laboratory methodology and engage in clinical or basic science research resulting in scholarship.
