A Patient's Mother asked me if she should give her 8 yo son daily over the counter allergy medicine to prevent his symptoms. He has been allergy tested and tested + to < 35 items. I know he is on sublingual drop therapy and he has a severe allergic reaction to peanuts as well. The mother was asking about long term effects of daily over the counter medicine usage for her son. I told her to ask her doctor but I would like some articles to refer to her and educate myself. Thank you.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Unfortunately, I cannot answer your question because there is simply not enough information to allow me to do so.

As you know, there are hundreds of over-the-counter medications, each with different side effects. I would need to know the exact medications (scientific rather than brand names) the child was taking, and what the diagnosis was.

So, all I can do is make a general comment, and state that as a rule daily use of over-the-counter medications is reasonably safe if they are taken according to the directions, and not overused.

Thank you again for your inquiry and we hope this response is helpful to you.
