I am writing a paper on anaphylaxis and I am reviewing the literature. I can’t find information on the total percent of the US population that has a significant allergy and requires an EpiPen. I have found percentages on food allergies but not all allergies combined. Can you help?

Thank you for your inquiry.

There are three references which will give you the best information we have available on the incidence of anaphylaxis in North America. These are:

1) Wood RA, Camargo CA, Lieberman P, Sampson HA, Schwartz LB, Zitt M, Collins C, Tringale M, Wilkinson M, Boyle J, Simons FER, et al. Anaphylaxis in America: The prevalence and characteristics of anaphylaxis in the United States. Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology; 21 October 2013.

3) Simons FER, Peterson S, Black CD. Epinephrine dispensing patterns for an out of hospital population: a novel approach to studying the epidemiology of anaphylaxis. J Allergy Clin Immunol 2002; 110:647-651.

Thank you again for your inquiry and we hope this response is helpful to you.
