Are you aware of any deaths due to anaphylaxis from allergy skin prick testing? What about intradermal testing? I am not aware of any deaths. I have also never heard of anyone having such severe anaphylaxis that the patient had to be sent to a hospital. (This question was prompted by my reading a recent advertising brochure from a well-known lab company for in-vitro IgE testing titled "Safer Allergy Testing")

A:

Thank you for your inquiry.

Although fatal reactions to skin testing are extremely rare, they have been reported. For a review and further bibliography, please see J Allergy Clin Immunol 2004; 113:1129-36.

Thank you again for your inquiry.

Sincerely,
Phil Lieberman, M.D.
