Have you heard of severe anaphylaxis (hypotension & nausea; requiring treatment in ER) after topical exposure to either or a combination of the following hand cleaners? What would you recommend as the next step?

Dirt Jet Pro (Tripropylene Glycol Methyl Ether, Methylchloroisothizaolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, d-limonene, Water, Lanolin, Nonylohenol Ethoxylate)

SCRUBS Hand Sanitizer Wipes (Water, Ethyl alcohol)

A:

Thank you for your inquiry.

Many of the chemical agents in commercial cleaners are known antigens in that there are recorded cases of contact dermatitis to these substances. However, I am not aware of any cases of anaphylaxis to any of the chemicals mentioned, and could not find any recorded cases of anaphylaxis to any of these chemicals on a literature search.

Thank you again for your inquiry.

Sincerely,
Phil Lieberman, M.D.
