Q:

9/11/2013
I read with interest your response regarding immunoCAP to palm oil. My reference lab (Solstas) states that there is no IgE to palm available. Could you elaborate as to where I can order this test (patient with anaphylaxis to red velvet cake, this is an ingredient)

A:

Thank you for your inquiry, and also for your interest in our website.

Unfortunately, your reference lab is correct. I think I failed to make myself crystal clear on this point, and I understand how you could have misunderstood. However, the entry you referred to was posted on 5/4/2012, entitled “Allergic reaction to ice cream containing kernel oil, locust bean, and carrageenan: availability of serum-specific IgE testing to these potential allergens.” The quote to which you referred was as follows:

“Kernel oil usually refers to the oil from the palm. There is a serum-specific IgE to oil palm pollen (ImmunoCAP), but I could find no test for serum-specific IgE to kernel oil per se.”

To clarify, by this I meant that there is specific IgE to the pollen of the oil palm tree, but there is no available serum-specific IgE to the oil per se.

Thank you again for your interest in our website, and I am sorry for the misunderstanding regarding the statement in question.

Sincerely,
Phil Lieberman, M.D.
