Service and Stewardship Overview
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) takes its fiscal and social responsibilities very seriously. Stewardship involves being good managers of our financial resources and making choices that are consistent with our values and mission. Stewardship also means that we are conscious of the needs of future generations. We invite you to learn about and consider giving to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Foundation, Inc. The AAAAI Foundation is dedicated to finding treatments and cures for the millions of people suffering from allergies, asthma and other immunologic diseases by supporting education and research.
Since its inception, the AAAAI has promoted service by our members for the betterment of the public and the patients we serve. Our goal is to inspire members’ involvement within the specialty and the AAAAI as well as within the places where we live and work. We are also dedicated to promoting access to and delivery of optimal health care to underserved communities.
In support of its mission to advance the knowledge and practice of allergy, asthma and immunology for optimal patient care the AAAAI continually endeavors to create effective and visible platforms for advocacy on issues involving the specialty and its patients.
To accomplish this goal, the AAAAI works with professional representatives on Capitol Hill under the leadership of the Practice & Policy and Research & Training Divisions of the Board of Directors. AAAAI Board members regularly visit Washington, DC, to meet with Senators and Representatives as well as agency officials who play leadership roles with respect to health policy and research.
The AAAAI has focused for a number of years on increased funding for research initiatives to promote best practices in the management of allergies, asthma and immune deficiency disorders. To allow the specialty to have an even stronger voice in Washington, the AAAAI recently expanded its advocacy efforts to also include legislative and coding and billing issues.
The AAAAI has joined with other leading medical specialty societies in Choosing WiselyTM, a proactive initiative of the ABIM Foundation. The Choosing Wisely campaign helps physicians, patients and other healthcare stakeholders think and talk about overuse or misuse of health care resources in the United States. This campaign is a natural extension the AAAAI’s ongoing commitment to empower physicians and patients with the information they need to make evidence-based decisions regarding the diagnosis, treatment and management of allergic and immunologic diseases. The AAAAI is pleased to underwrite the Chrysalis Project. This program presents U.S. and Canadian medical students and internal medicine and/or pediatric residents the opportunity to explore a potential career in allergy / immunology. To qualify for the Chrysalis Project, applicants must fall into one of the following categories: MD PhD students during research training year; Medical students in their final year of training (4th); 1st year residents in IM, Peds or MedPeds; 2nd year residents in IM, Peds or Med/Peds, particularly those without an AI training program at their institution; or 3rd year MedPeds residents or 3rd year IM or Peds resident who is participating in a Chief year at their institution. Please note since the Chrysalis Project is a recruitment program, prioritization will be given to medical students and junior residents who are unsure of their career path, rather than senior residents who are already committed to applying for Allergy/Immunology fellowship. These resident applications will still be reviewed and considered for any open slots. Individuals who were previously selected for the Chrysalis Project are not eligible to participate in the program a second time.
The program includes both a half day of didactic lectures presented by prominent A/I faculty and attendance at the AAAAI Annual Meeting. Participants are paired with Fellow-in-Training (FIT) mentors who can answer questions about the specialty and guide them through the Annual Meeting educational sessions and events.
