Protect NIH. Protect Patients.
What’s Happening
More than $1.5 billion in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding has been frozen since January 2025. At the same time, legislation (H.R. 1497) seeks to dismantle the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) — the primary source of federal support for allergy and immunology research — and divide it into three separate institutes. If action isn't taken immediately, the result will be devastating for our specialty and our patients.
NIH funding cuts threaten:
• Research on asthma, food allergies, atopic dermatitis (eczema) and immune deficiencies
• Clinical trials at academic medical centers
• Training of the next generation of allergists and immunologists
• Access to new treatments and therapies for patients nationwide
Splitting NIAID would fracture the essential connections between allergy, immunology and infectious disease research — halting the breakthroughs our patients urgently need.
Why This Matters
This isn’t just about science. It’s about our patients. And it’s about the future of our specialty.
Allergic, immunologic and infectious disease research is deeply interconnected — and essential for pandemic response, vaccine development, and defense against emerging threats.
Weakening NIAID’s unified structure puts the nation’s health preparedness at risk.
Why It Matters to Allergy, Asthma & Immunology
The NIH has supported many of the greatest advances in our field:
• Biologic therapies for asthma
• Immunotherapy research for food allergy breakthroughs, including prevention
• Treatments for atopic dermatitis (eczema)
• Better care for patients with immunodeficiencies
Today, that progress is at risk. Without NIH funding, clinical trials will stall, future breakthroughs will be delayed and fewer physicians will be trained. Rural and underserved areas will suffer the most. Patient access to specialty care will be decimated.
What We Are Doing
The NIH funding cuts and dismantling of the NIAID, if realized, will have devastating consequences for research, education and patient care in allergy/immunology. That’s why we’ve convened the AAAAI Scientific Community Task Force for A/I Research to lead our advocacy efforts. On behalf of the AAAAI, the task force has already written to members of Congress to oppose H.R. 1497, demand the release of frozen NIH funds and to protect F&A support. (Senate) (House) We need you to join us in this effort.
