AAAAI Advocacy on Scope of Practice Issues

August 18, 2020
The AAAAI urged its California-based members to contact their elected state legislators to express concern regarding A.B. 890. This legislation, now enacted, grants full practice authority to nurse practitioners (NPs) without physician supervision, and lacks critical details related to NP competency requirements.

The AAAAI remains concerned about scope of practice issues that impact the practicing allergist and our patients. The American Medical Association has been a leader on this very important issue for a number of years.

Recently, the Trump administration proposed rules that caused considerable concern for impact on practicing allergists. The AAAAI joined a list of other specialty societies and state medical societies in a letter in expressing broad concerns for patient care and physician impact from the proposals. The AAAAI Advocacy Committee and Office of Practice Management had additional concerns, and sent an additional letter expressing our concerns on behalf of the allergy / immunology specialty specifically.
