ABIM Foundation

The ABIM Foundation is dedicated to advancing medical professionalism to improve the health care system. This is achieved by collaborating with physicians and physician leaders, medical trainees, health care delivery systems, payers, policy makers, consumer organizations and patients to foster a shared understanding of professionalism and how they can adopt the tenets of professionalism in practice.

One of these collaborative efforts is Choosing Wisely™, a multi-year campaign designed to support and engage physicians in being better stewards of finite health care resources. The goal of Choosing Wisely is to promote conversations between physicians and patients about utilizing the most appropriate tests and treatments and avoiding care whose harm may outweigh the benefits.

As a way to begin these conversations, nine national specialty societies served as launch partners in developing evidence-based lists of overused or misused tests or procedures for physicians and patients to discuss. These lists are designed to support physician and patient relationships by encouraging specific conversations about appropriate individualized testing and treatment plans.

The AAAAI is proud to be one of the inaugural partners of this campaign. Read about the AAAAI’s Ten Things Physicians and Patients Should Question, as well as the process for creation of this list.

Practice Wisely is a feature that debuted in July 2021 and appears in the AAAAI’s Practice Matters newsletter.
