A systematic evaluation of asthma management apps examining behavior change techniques

Patients and families looking for mobile health technology to assist them in management of asthma may feel overwhelmed by the multitude of available apps.

Fundamentally, these apps serve two goals, the first is better symptom tracking and the second are behavioral change strategies, aimed at assisting patients in medication adherence and symptom management.  In a study in the The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice entitled A Systematic Evaluation of Asthma Management Apps Examining Behavior Change Techniques (Nov 2019), the authors performed an evaluation of 23 available mobile apps for asthma based on two previously validated metrics. Their main interest was in identifying which apps had the best evidence-based behavior change strategies. The two apps that were found to have significantly superior behavior change strategies were Kiss myAsthma and AsthmaMD.

Mobile health technology can be an incredibly useful tool in affecting positive behavior change, which can ultimately help our patients gain better control of their asthma. As technology becomes a bigger part of healthcare management, we need to have the ability to guide our patients through the landscape of available applications.

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice is an official journal of the AAAAI, focusing on practical information for the practicing clinician.
