Academy CAN! Volunteer Allergist/Immunologist Profile The ideal Academy CAN! volunteer physician is a board certified allergist/immunologist committed to improving allergy and asthma care to underserved populations. He or she is a skilled teacher who works well with primary care providers and is sensitive to environments of cultural diversity and economic challenge. The AAAAI requires volunteers to spend at least four hours a month working at their designated community clinic, engaged in teaching, caring for patients and bringing the benefits of special procedures (e.g. spirometry, specific IgE testing, ELISA or skin testing) to the clinic populations. In addition, the AAAAI requires the volunteer to host at least one formal education meeting with clinic personnel to discuss asthma treatment guidelines and maximize staff interaction. Above all, the Academy CAN! physician should be an enthusiastic and innovative practitioner dedicated to advancing the mission of the Academy CAN! Program. Eligibility Both academic and community-based practitioners are eligible, so long as they can dedicate a minimum of four hours of their time to the program on a monthly basis, for a minimum of 12 months. Benefits for Participating Allergist/Immunologists The opportunity to volunteer in your community, acting as a teacher, expert consultant, practitioner and referral resource for a participating community health center. The opportunity to advance allergy and asthma care for underserved patients In addition to the altruistic gratification, each CAN volunteer allergist will be given an honoraria to cover partial costs associated with their contribution at the completion of their 12-months of service.
