What is a committee?

All committees are made up exclusively of AAAAI members. From time to time, non-members may be asked to participate in a committee meeting or provide expert counsel on a certain issue, but they are not considered a member per se. Each committee has at least three members and generally no more than 30 members. It is highly recommended that each AAAAI member be aligned with at least one Interest Section. As an Interest Section member, an individual has the right to vote on Interest Section business. The Interest Sections are overseen by a committee made up of a Chair, a Vice-Chair and the chairs of the committees that fall under that Interest Section. For more information on Interest Sections, click here.

The AAAAI has three types of committees, Interest Section, Division and Board Committees.

Interest Section Committees are associated with the functions and activities of Interest Sections. Their responsibilities are to facilitate the exchange of information among and between Interest Section members, consider any need to establish standards in the field, and conduct appropriate, approved research projects.

All AAAAI members are eligible to serve on any Interest Section Committee regardless of their status as an Interest Section voting member. However, they may not serve on more than Committees at the same time.

Division Committees are associated with the functions and activities of AAAAI Board Divisions. Participation on Division Committees, in general, requires appointment by the president-elect and approval of the Board of Directors. Any AAAAI member is eligible for appointment to a Division Committee unless the appointment is restricted to AAAAI Fellows.

Membership on Board committees is by President-elect appointment only. These include committees related to the administrative, operational and membership issues of the AAAAI.

Terms
In general, each Chair, Vice-Chair and committee member serves one-year terms. Committee chair and vice chair terms are renewable for an additional year, while members can serve up to a full five years on a committee. All terms start at the AAAAI Annual Meeting.

Purpose
Each committee has a clearly stated purpose, which is reviewed annually by the committee. Changes to this purpose statement must be approved by the appropriate Interest Section, Division or Assembly Chair, with the Board of Directors signing off on significant changes.

Appointment Process
Except as otherwise provided in the Bylaws, the President-Elect appoints members to all Division committees, other than committees of Assemblies or Interest Sections. These appointments take effect at the AAAAI Annual Meeting in which the President-Elect assumes the office of President.

The proposed appointments are presented at the November Board of Directors meeting. Members of any class shall be eligible for appointment to committees other than the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee or the Nominating Committee. Also at the November meeting, the Interest Sections recommend committee appointments to the Board of Directors, and the Board shall vote on such recommended appointments.
