Major Goals of Training Program
The Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology offers a two year fellowship program in Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The program is ACGME approved and is designed to prepare pediatric and/or internal medicine trained fellows for independent or group practice and to qualify for the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (a conjoined board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics) exam. The Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology sees patients in both internal medicine and pediatric age groups. Henry Ford Hospital is one of the major referral centers in Michigan. In addition, fellows-in-training are exposed to a wide variety of allergic as well as clinical immunologic problems. The fellow learns to handle patients on a day-to-day basis, much as one would in a private practice situation. In addition, fellows participate in interesting patient and project research. The fellow is instructed in basic immunology at Wayne State University while attending a graduate level immunology course. The fellows are expected to present the results of research projects at national meetings and in peer-reviewed publications. The fellows learn by consultation and demonstration as well as through weekly didactic lectures and literature review sessions.

Major Goals of Training Program
This program provides excellent opportunities for experiences in clinical immunology including adult and pediatric immunodeficiency diseases, pediatric AIDS, sarcoidosis, bone marrow transplantation, and medical laboratory immunology. Excellent experiences in adult and pediatric clinical allergy are provided as well. The research requirement for the ABAI can be fulfilled within the medical school’s Department of Immunology and Microbiology, with preceptors who are fellowship program faculty, or with other university faculty. Trainees are expected to present the results of their research at national meetings and in peer-reviewed publications. One recent graduate has pursued an academic career, and three are in private practice.
