Why I chose allergy/immunology
Marquardt is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the
University of California-San Diego School of Medicine. She is also a
recent recipient of the AAAAI Women Physician Allergy Recognition
Awards, which honors women's achievements in the allergy/immunology
field and identifies women with leadership potential. She is also the
captain of the "Quick Chicks" Mojave Death Race Team, a 12-person
relay running and biking team that trekked across the Mojave Desert in
June 2001.
"I chose allergy/immunology because I started doing an allergy
research project while in medical school. The project was very
successful, allowing me to write a paper for the Journal of
Immunology and present my data at scientific meetings. I went on
from there to do internal medicine training and take an academic
position at the University of California-San Diego in 1984. Today I
conduct basic research in cell and molecular biology of mast cells,
including adenosine receptors on mast cells and their role in allergic
inflammation and asthma."
