Careers in A/I for Medical Students and Medical Residents: FAQ

What is the job market like?
Currently there are not enough specialists to fill the positions of retiring allergist. This is good news for those actively seeking a position. There is also new evidence that the need for specialists is rising in contrast to managed care's decreased need for primary care physicians.

A June 2000 report entitled, "The Allergy and Immunology Workforce" by SUNY-Albany's Center for Health Workforce Studies forecasts a severe shortage of allergists by 2010, while recent graduates are very enthusiastic about the field and their career choice.
