Fellows in Training and Faculty Build an Online Case-based Curriculum of Allergy and Immunology with Mnemonics and Mind Maps: AllergyCases.org
AllergyCases.org (http://allergycases.org) is a free online case-based curriculum of Allergy and Immunology for fellows in training (FITs), medical residents and students. The website is supported by fellows and faculty from the Creighton University Division of Allergy and Immunology, and the Allergy and Immunology Section of Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (Shreveport). One of the authors is Dr. Dimov who worked on a similar project at the Cleveland Clinic before joining Creighton University as a fellow. His website with clinical cases from several specialties reached 2.5 million page views, and was featured in 10 peer-reviewed medical journals and linked by the websites of 28 medical schools. The authors are hoping to replicate this success with AllergyCases.org.
Since its launch in early 2008, AllergyCases.org has consistently been ranked as a top result by Google.com among more than 8 million online sources and has had more than 65,000 page views. The educational value of the cases is enhanced by succinct clinical notes, visual mind maps (central concept in the middle, secondary concepts in the periphery) and easy-to-remember mnemonics.
FITs are invited to discuss the diagnosis and management of the clinical cases in small teaching groups and in the online comments section. The goals of the web site are to enhance patient care skills of allergists/immunologists, FITs and other trainees and health care providers, and to enhance the preparation of the FITs for the American Board of Allergy and Immunology exam by adding an interactive case-based resource to the available textbooks and multiple choice questions. AllergyCases.org aims at stimulating scholarly activity among fellows and other health care providers and students by providing a platform for honing their case report writing skills, under the supervision of faculty. Interested FITs can submit teaching cases and suggestions by using the secure online form available on the website. With the addition of more contributors, AllergyCases.org is poised to become a valuable resource for the education of fellows in training.
