Incidence of food allergy to specific foods11/4/2009

There is a lot of literature regarding the prevalence of specific food allergies among the entire population, but I could not find any references regarding the prevalence of a specific food allergy (eg. peanut, tree nut, egg, milk, soy, fish, shellfish, wheat) among food allergic patients. What percentage of food allergic patients are allergic to any of these specific foods? I am sure it will differ with age...Can you please direct me to a reference, because I have been having a very difficult time finding this data. Thank you. |

There are a number of excellent and very comprehensive reviews that deal with the topic of food allergy, and I believe they may contain information related to your specific question. An excellent chapter was written by Drs. Hugh A. Sampson and Wesley Burks. It is entitled, "Adverse Reactions to Foods." It is in Middleton's Allergy: Principles and Practice, 7th edition, Volume 2, 2009. It begins on Page 1138 and runs through 1168.
Another review on this topic is by Drs. Corinne Keet and Robert Wood, entitled "Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis" appearing in Immunology and Allergy Clinics of North America, Volume 27, Pages 193-212, 2007.
