Major Goals of Training Program
The UCLA/VA Allergy and Immunology fellowship training program accepts two Internal Medicine-trained applicants annually, providing training for those pursuing a career in clinical Allergy and Immunology. Our fellowship program was initially established as an independent VA program in 1974 and has been under the sponsorship of UCLA as of 2021. Fellows provide care to adult and pediatric cases across diverse inpatient and outpatient settings. Our program places a strong emphasis on comprehensive training, fostering fellows to develop their skills and excel in delivering exceptional medical care at three distinguished sites: West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center. They also ensure continuous care for their patient panel at the VA and engage in scholarly activities such as presentations, publications, and veteran-centered research and quality assurance projects. Our two-year curriculum offers our fellows to gain intensive clinical and hands-on experience, particularly at the primary VA Allergy and Immunology site, which is based under the Department of Internal Medicine. Graduates emerge as proficient practitioners, consultants, educators, and physician-scientists, specializing in asthma, sinus diseases, allergic skin conditions, food allergies, and immunologic disorders. This ensures that each fellow gains essential clinical experience, nurturing a successful career in Allergy and Immunology.

Major Goals of Training Program
The UCSF AI Fellowship Training Program is accepting Pediatric and Internal Medicine applicants who want a career in Allergy/Immunology. The goal of the Program is to provide outstanding clinical and research training in pediatric and adult allergy and immunology to physicians with a primary interest in an academic career. The UCSF A/I Fellowship training program utilizes the world-class basic immunology program at UCSF with well-funded investigators who study all aspects of immunology and allergic inflammation. We have outstanding graduate training in the UCSF Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Program, with approximately 50 current advanced trainees in Immunology. An NIH T32 Training Grant supports postdoctoral research in the Immunology Program. Complementary clinical resources include a wealth of physician faculty in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and allied subspecialties to train clinical fellows in immunology and allergy.

A unique aspect of the Pediatric program is its strong relationship with the UCSF Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program, which is ranked among the top programs of its size in the US, with expertise and special emphasis in treating children with primary immunodeficiency disorders. UCSF is the lead institution for the Primary Immunodeficiency Treatment Consortium, which has the objective of advancing our understanding and treatment of primary immunodeficiency diseases as well as training junior scientists and clinicians in Primary Immune Deficiency, and UCSF is a leader and referral center for the California SCID newborn screening program. Finally, UCSF is an active member of the NIH-sponsored Asthma Clinical Research Network of clinical centers dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of asthma. A/I trainees will be exposed to all of these resources during their training.
