AAAAI Statements and Work Group Reports
AAAAI statements are not to be construed as dictating an exclusive course of action; nor are they intended to replace the medical judgment of healthcare professionals. The unique circumstances of individual patients and environments are to be taken into account in any diagnosis and treatment plan. AAAAI statements reflect clinical and scientific advances as of the date of their publication and are subject to change.
Listed below are the current statements of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. These statements are divided into two categories: position statements and work group reports.
Position Statements
Position statements of the AAAAI examine an aspect or aspects of clinical practice or research pertaining to allergic/immunologic disease, and through literature review and a consensus of experts, set forth a position designed to outline appropriate care or the appropriate application of research. They may also examine an issue related to allergic/immunologic disease and public policy, and articulate an ideological stance and steps to advance that position. They are well referenced and contain extensive bibliographies. Position statements serve as official statements of the AAAAI. Because of their weight, position statements are created only after careful discussion and review.
Work Group Reports
Work group reports provide further comment or clarification on appropriate methods of treatment or care. They are generally created by committees or work groups. The goal of work group reports is to aid practitioners in making patient decisions. They do not constitute official statements of the AAAAI, but serve to bring attention to key clinical or sometimes controversial issues. They contain a bibliography, but typically not one as extensive as that contained within a position statement.
Lifespan of AAAAI Statements
After five years from the date of publication, AAAAI position statements and work group reports are not to be considered to reflect current AAAAI standards or policy. The AAAAI maintains these statements in archives for the purpose of reference only.
