How Referral to an Allergy/Immunology Physician can Help in the Diagnosis and Management of Rhinitis

1. Allergy/Immunology Physicians Can Help Diagnose and Treat Prolonged or Severe Rhinitis

  • Rhinitis, or nasal inflammation, is frequently associated with other conditions such as asthma and sinus infections. Rhinitis has been found to significantly interfere with quality of life and ability to function. Some persons with rhinitis are not easily treated with the usual medicines or have had side effects with medicines.
  • Care of rhinitis by an Allergy/Immunology Physician has been shown to improve quality of life measures, use of medicines and other treatments, and satisfaction with care in patients with chronic rhinitis. Allergy/Immunology Physicians can help people with rhinitis understand their options and educate them on what works best and why.
  • Allergies cannot be accurately diagnosed based on history alone. Allergies can affect the nose, sinuses and lungs. Allergists are extensively trained in the diagnosis of allergies through interpretation of both symptoms and allergy tests.
  • Allergy/Immunology Physicians are trained and experienced in dealing with the numerous allergens, both indoors and outdoors, which cause allergic rhinitis, or hay fever. Once allergens are identified, Allergy/Immunology Physicians are experts at providing guidance on allergen avoidance.
  • Allergy shots, or immunotherapy, can be very effective in treating allergic rhinitis. The benefits of allergy shots may last after shots have been stopped. Allergy/Immunology Physicians are uniquely trained and experienced in the use of allergy shots.

2. Allergy/Immunology Physicians May be Able to Help Prevent the Development of Further Allergic Diseases

  • In children with allergic rhinitis, allergy shots have been shown to reduce the development of more allergies and also to decrease asthma

3. Allergy/Immunology Physicians Can Help Diagnose and Treat Nasal Polyps

  • Nasal polyps are benign growths from the nose or sinuses. They are often associated with allergies and sinus problems. Allergy/Immunology Physicians are trained and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of nasal polyps and also diseases which may be seen with nasal polyps.
