  Rhinosinusitis:  Is My Rhinosinusitis Allergy-Related?

Nasal allergies (allergic rhinitis or "hayfever") cause nasal itching and sneezing, runny nose, nasal stuffiness and postnasal drainage. These symptoms are similar to those of rhinosinusitis. Most experts believe nasal and sinus swelling from allergies can contribute to the development of rhinosinusitis. However, other factors, such as chronic infection, also contribute significantly to the development of chronic rhinosinusitis. Studies have demonstrated that individuals with rhinosinusitis who are allergic tend to have more extensive disease (Ramadan et al. Am J Rhinol 1999;13:345-7; Hoover GE et al. JACI 1997;100:185-91)

Because of the importance of allergies to nasal and sinus symptoms, patients with chronic rhinosinusitis should be evaluated for nasal allergies.  For more information, see our Tips to Remember brochure on rhinitis.
