Headstrong-I'll Take on Anything!

My mom says I'm headstrong,
And well I may be,
But because I am headstrong,
I'll take on anything!

Listening to my wheezing,
I lie in bed,
After a long day of school,
Mu Alpha Theta, NHS and Physics Lab.

After hours of homework,
Desperately, I try to fall asleep,
But the sound of my breathing
Prevents me from catching a peep.

I instinctively reach out
To my nightstand on the right,
And without ever looking,
Grab my inhaler to ease my plight.

My inhaler was a part
Of my daily routine.
It helped me to live on with
The asthma that afflicted me but couldn't be seen.

It has hindered me before,
It has set me back,
Made me give away my only dog,
After an allergy-induced asthma attack.

It prevented me from running,
Kept me from my friends who have pets,
But, by using my inhaler,
I learned to deal with my asthma and have no regrets.

I think of the past,
And all that it's meant,
And how my coping with asthma
Will no longer prevent

Me from doing what I love.
Now, I've learned to take control
And deny it a hold,
And live a life that's full and whole.

I'll accomplish my dreams,
Live my life to my full potential,
Succeed I will,
My success is eventual.

By avoiding the triggers,
And being prepared,
I will take on my asthma,
And whatever it dares.

Practice basketball drills with my sister,
Do all that life may bring,
Play my flute,
I can take on anything.

No longer a victim,
Of chest pains and poor breathing,
I'm headstrong,
And I'll take on anything!
