New Research - October 2009
Severe cases of H1N1 influenza
Summary
This article originated in Spain and consists of data collected from multiple intensive care units. The authors reported 32 cases of H1N1 influenza requiring intensive care therapy. A chart review was performed to identify common characteristics. Patient data were collected between June 23 and July 31, 2009. The median age of these patients was 36 years. Ten (31.2%) were obese, 2 (6.3%) were pregnant, and 16 (50%) had preexisting comorbidities. Thirty-one (90.6%) had a primary viral pneumonia, and there were a total of 8 deaths. There was delay in administration of oseltamivir ranging from two to eight days after the onset of symptoms.
The authors stated that "Clinicians should be aware of pulmonary complications of influenza A (H1N1) infection, particularly in pregnant and young obese, but previously healthy persons."
