Exhaled nitric oxide and the risk of respiratory illness
Summary
The data in this study developed from the Child Asthma Research and Education Network (CARE) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). The object was to determine whether exhaled nitric oxide had an effect on the risk of respiratory tract illnesses.
Exhaled nitric oxide was measured in 89 children aged 12 to 59 months, all of whom had moderate to severe intermittent wheezing. Exhaled nitric oxide levels of greater than 24.4 ppb were associated with increased risk of respiratory tract illness. In addition, levels of greater than 24.4 ppb were associated with the presence of more positive skin tests to aeroallergens
