Insulin resistance is associated with asthma-like symptoms

Because there is evidence obesity is associated with asthma, the authors looked at whether or not insulin resistance, often seen in obesity, was also associated with an increased incidence of asthma symptoms.

They evaluated 6,784 subjects participating in a health examination between 1999 and 2001. After five years, these patients were reinvited. Four thousand five hundred sixteen participated in the follow-up.

Three indices were measured: Body mass index, waist circumference, and waist to hip ratio. In addition, fasting glucose and insulin were also measured for determination of insulin resistance. Information was gathered on asthma-like symptoms at baseline and on follow-up via questionnaire.

All of the obesity measures were associated with an increased incidence of wheezing and asthma-like symptoms. In addition, insulin resistance was also associated with wheezing and asthma-like symptoms. The effect of insulin resistance was stronger than that of obesity, and was independent of gender.
