Effect of corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists on fibronectin and tenascin-C production in cultured fibroblasts

Airway remodeling is characterized by the deposition of extracellular matrix proteins within the lung. Two of these are fibronectin and tenascin-C. The investigators in this study desired to assess the effect of fluticasone and salmeterol on the deposition of these substances.

They used fibroblasts cultured in serum-free medium.

Fluticasone increased fibronectin transcription and decreased tenascin-C transcription. Salmeterol had no effect on either fibronectin or tenascin-C.
