Vitamin D insufficiency and asthma severity
The investigators looked at vitamin D levels in children living in Costa Rica. They found that vitamin D deficiency was common with 175 of 616 asthmatic children (28%) having insufficient levels (<30 mg/ml). Low levels were associated with higher IgE and eosinophil counts. They were also associated with hospitalization rate, use of medication, and airway responsiveness.
The authors concluded that vitamin D insufficiency was associated with increased markers of allergy and asthma severity.
