Failure of azithromycin or montelukast to exert steroid sparing effect in small group of moderate to severe asthmatics

This is a report of a multicenter ongoing study of children with moderate to severe asthma. The investigators wished to see if daily administration of azithromycin or montelukast would be steroid sparing. They screened 292 children to enter the study, but only 55 were randomized. In this small group they found that neither montelukast nor azithromycin was steroid sparing in a double-masked, parallel, multicenter evaluation.

The primary outcome was time from randomization to inadequate asthma control in patients using budesonide/salmeterol.
