Is pneumococcal vaccine protective in adults?
The authors of this article were located in Switzerland and the United Kingdom The objective of their effort was to decide whether or not pneumococcal vaccine in adults was protective. The rationale behind their efforts was based upon previous investigations which have questioned this efficacy.
They performed a meta-analysis of clinical trials, searching several databases and bibliographies. They included 22 trials involving 101,507 participants. Their conclusion was that pneumococcal vaccination does not appear to be effective in preventing pneumonia in adults, even in populations for whom the vaccine is currently recommended.
