Elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines in nasal polyps portend for poorer responses to intranasal corticosteroids

The authors of this investigation obtained biopsies from nasal polyps in 20 patients, both before and after therapy with intranasal budesonide. They measured TNF-alpha, eotaxin-2, p65, IL-1 beta, ICAM, and GR-beta, and the clinical response to treatment. Budesonide treatment significantly decreased TNF-alpha, eotaxin-2, and p65. Individuals expressing higher pretreatment levels of IL-1 beta, ICAM, p65, and TNF-alpha noted diminished response to budesonide treatment. In addition, the resistant group had a relatively decreased reduction in IL-1 beta and GR-beta after treatment.
