Peripheral T-cell function is exaggerated and abnormal in patients with COPD and correlates with disease severity
The authors evaluated peripheral T-cell markers and function in patients with COPD. Patients with emphysema had less CD4 T-cells producing IL-10. On the other hand, the CD8 T-cells from COPD patients were more often activated, producing both IFN-gamma and IL-4.
The severity of the COPD was inversely associated with circulating CD4 T-cells as well as the frequency of CD8 T-cell activation and CD8 interferon gamma production. The authors concluded that circulating T-cells from COPD patients are abnormally activated, elaborating pro-inflammatory mediators that consisted of a mixture of both Th1 and Th2 responses. These abnormal responses were correlated with disease severity.
