Do corticosteroids plus salmeterol compare to inhaled corticosteroids alone regarding serious asthma-related events?

Summary
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the incidence of severe asthma-related events (hospitalizations, deaths, et cetera) in persons receiving salmeterol plus inhaled corticosteroids compared with inhaled corticosteroids alone. They evaluated randomized controlled trials that compared inhaled corticosteroids plus salmeterol to inhaled corticosteroids alone in patients with asthma.

They evaluated 66 Glaxo Smith Kline trials involving a total of 20,966 participants. They found that salmeterol combined with inhaled corticosteroids diminished the risk for severe exacerbations. However, the combination did not seem to alter the risk for asthma-related hospitalizations, and may not alter the risk for asthma-related deaths or intubations compared with inhaled corticosteroids alone.
