Fish allergy in childhood

Summary
This is a review of adverse reactions to the ingestion of fish in children. The authors found that fish allergy in children seems to be increasing, and is dependent upon the local diet. The highest consumption of fish occurs in the Scandinavian countries, Spain, and Portugal. In Spain, in children under 2 years of age, fish is the third most frequent allergy, following egg and cow's milk.

Most reactions to fish are IgE mediated, but food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome also occurs.

Asthma due to the inhalation of fumes from cooked fish can also occur.
