Hypersensitivity to cyclooxygenase inhibitory drugs in children: a study of 164 cases

Summary
The authors evaluated 164 children who had described 213 reactions to analgesics including paracetamol (acetaminophen), ibuprofen, and/or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). The majority of the reactions had cutaneous manifestations. There were associated respiratory symptoms, and anaphylaxis occurred as well.

Sixty percent reported reactions to ASA, 76.5% to ibuprofen, and 23.2% to paracetamol. 59.1% of patients reacting to nonsteroidals demonstrated cross-reactivity with other nonsteroidals. However, only 10.6% of those sensitive to nonsteroidals reacted to paracetamol. On the other hand, all of the children who reacted to paracetamol also reacted to a nonsteroidal.
