Churg-Strauss Syndrome and chronic eosinophilic pneumonia: distinguishing features
Summary
The differential diagnosis between chronic eosinophilic pneumonia in an asthmatic and Churg-Strauss can be difficult, and Churg-Strauss is often preceded by chronic eosinophilic pneumonia. The authors therefore wished to be able to identify features that might distinguish eosinophilic pneumonia in the asthmatic from Churg-Strauss. To do that, they looked at the role of regulatory T cells in these diseases. They evaluated 38 patients with Churg-Strauss and 20 with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia. They looked at the number of CD4 + CD25 + T cells in peripheral blood, and several cytokines. They found that patients with Churg-Strauss had significantly fewer CD4 + CD25 + T cells than did those with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia.
They concluded that the "maintenance of the numbers of regulatory T cells in patients with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia and asthma might inhibit the development of Churg-Strauss."
