A new hypoallergenic amino acid-based formula

Summary
These investigators looked at 165 healthy formula-fed infants randomized to receive a new amino acid-based formula or a casein extensively hydrolyzed formula. After 120 days, both groups tolerated the formulas. There was no difference in growth between the two groups.

The authors then took 32 infants who were allergic to cow's milk, and administered the amino acid-based formula. They performed a double blind, placebo-controlled food challenge, an open challenge, and then a 7-day feeding challenge in 29 of these infants. No allergic reactions occurred during any of the challenges.

These results supported the safety and hypoallergenicity of the new amino acid-based formula.
