A number of resources are available concerning practice-based learning and improvement. For those wanting more information on the subject, some selected additional resources are presented.

ACGME The ACGME provides an extensive annotated bibliography of references concerning practice-based learning and improvement. References are found on the ACGME website and are grouped by category:

     • analyze own practice for needed improvements
     • use of evidence from scientific studies and application of research and statistical methods
     • use of information technology
     • facilitate learning of others

American Society
of Internal Medicine
ACP-ASIM
The ACP-ASIM offers a Resource Guide to Curriculum Development. In it, they identify a number of competencies that may be useful in addressing issues of practice-based learning and improvement, including:

     • lifelong learning
     • medical informatics
     • management of the quality of health care  
     • clinical epidemiology and quantitative clinical reasoning

While this resource was developed for internal medicine residency programs, much of the information is generalizable across specialties.

ACP Journal Club The ACP Journal Club identifies evidence-based articles about practice-based learning and improvement. As with most strategies used to search the literature, citations retrieved as a result of a search of key words will produce articles that may or may not be relevant to the question at hand.

Association of American Medical Colleges
(AAMC)
The AAMC has composed a Graduate Medical Education Core Curriculum to assist programs in meeting the ACGME requirements. The Core Curriculum consists of five domains that map to the ACGME core competencies, including practice-based learning and improvement.
