| Introduction |
Particularly in the area of interpersonal and communication skills, training program directors have at their disposal two of the most powerful resources for assuring that their fellows achieve competency in this area: selection of trainees and role modeling by faculty. While it is generally agreed that communication skills can be taught, selecting fellows who have already demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients and families and with peers and colleagues means that more program effort can be concentrated on continuing development of such skills rather than remediation. Similarly, there is considerable evidence showing the impact of the informal curriculum on the development of learners. This means that the actions of faculty are crucial in promoting and modeling the desired learner behaviors. Resources included in the module focus on a number of areas related to interpersonal and communication skills. Some of these materials are interactive. Some are readings or videos that may be used to trigger discussion. Yet others are tools that fellows can use to facilitate communication with patients. Training programs will want to document group use of resources and individual fellows will want to document their use of specific resources. |
