OBJECTIVES

  1. Upon completion of this rotation the rotator should be able to:

  2. List functions of Th1, Th2, and B cells
  3. Describe briefly the interaction between T cells, B cells and macrophages
  4. Describe the various classes of immunoglobulins and their functions
  5. Discuss functions of IgG subclasses and their use in diagnosis of immunodeficiency
  6. Discuss the use of functional antibody assays in the diagnosis of humoral immune deficiency
  7. List the components of the complement system and disorders associated with deficiency of C1INH, early classical pathway components, late classical pathway components
  8. Explain the major steps of phagocytosis
  9. List two diseases with phagocytic dysfunction
  10. Describe the cytokines, interleukins, and interferons available for clinical use and indications for use of these modalities
  11. Classify immunodeficiency diseases including:
    1. B cell immunodeficiency diseases
    2. T cell immunodeficiency diseases
    3. combined B cell and T cell immunodeficiency diseases
  12. For the immunodeficiency states above describe:
    1. common presenting signs and symptoms
    2. common physical findings
    3. types of organisms typically causing infection in these patients
    4. differential diagnoses of
      1. recurrent respiratory tract infections, including cystic fibrosis, IgE-mediated processes, air pollution exposure, anatomic abnormalities, etc.
      2. recurrent sepsis and/or meningitis
      3. recurrent soft-tissue, bone, and joint bacterial infections
  13. List three laboratory methods to identify deficiency of antibody-mediated immunity
  14. List two methods for screening for cell-mediated immunity
  15. List two laboratory test methods for screening for phagocytic deficiency
  16. List the laboratory tests for screening of complement deficiency
  17. List three laboratory tests for screening for autoimmune disease.
  18. List common systemic presentations for the major autoimmune diseases in childhood (for pediatrics), adolescence (for all), and adulthood (for internal medicine)
  19. List three laboratory methods of screening for HIV disease
