Members Member Resources: Revised AAAAI Code of Ethics
The AAAAI Board of Directors has approved changes to the AAAAI Code of Ethics at its March 2004 meeting. This is a direct result from the Ethics Audit completed in 2002. Although the AAAAI Code of Ethics was found to be in excellent shape, improvements were suggested to further strengthen this important policy document. Based on this input, the Ethics/Conflict of Interest Committee, Legal Council, and the Executive Committee have been involved in recommending updates to the Code, which the Board has now approved.
In summary, the changes to the code involve:
- Internalizing the Code of Ethics to the AAAAI and not referring to ethical matters outside its jurisdiction or to other organizations.
- Bringing practices in line with current legal opinions and laws.
- Only AAAAI Members are able to bring forth a complaint under the AAAAI Code of Ethics.
- The requirements to disclose personal interests are now strengthened. It is also able to be collected online, via the Online Disclosure Management System.
- The make-up of the Ethics/Conflict of Interest Committee has now been changed:
- The committee can now include member types other than Fellow. This allows all members to have an opportunity to be involved in educational aspects of the committee.
- The Fellows of the committee constitute the Ethics Panel, whose responsibility is to investigate each inquiry and challenge from the code.
- Allows for an appellate body should one be needed.
As stipulated in the bylaws, the Board has the power to amend the document and shall be published in one of the AAAAI's official publication. This posting fulfills this obligation. Members are invited to comment on the new Code of Ethics. Comments can be sent to info@aaaai.org.
