AAAAI Announces New CME Application

Beginning immediately, the AAAAI will be providing a new application to be used by groups applying for CME credit for their educational activities. The updated form will allow us to collect additional information about all CME activities that is now required by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), and will help groups applying for credit to more easily comply with ACCME guidelines.

What's New in the New Application?

For those who have applied to the AAAAI for accreditation in the past, most of the form and the required information will look familiar. However, the categories of required information have been reorganized to more closely follow the steps involved in the development of your CME activity.

There is, though, some new information that is now required. These are:

Page 2: The Application Checklist is now more detailed, and outlines specific deadlines for submitting the necessary documentation of your planning and execution.

Pages 6-8: The development of Needs Assessment and Learning Objectives has been enhanced to include additional information now required by the ACCME - the practice gaps, outcomes, and physician competencies your activity will address.

Pages 14-18: The AAAAI has updated its Disclosure Policy and Form; this new form must be used going forward. It includes a new category of financial relationship (Legal Consultation/Expert Witness Testimony) and asks design committee members and faculty members to indicate the relative value of each relationship (greater or less than $10,000).

Page 20: The Faculty Reimbursement Guidelines have been enhanced with more specific standards for activity planners to follow when determining travel reimbursements and speaker honoraria.

There are also some changes to the application process that will require your attention:

The entire application has been reformatted as an electronic form. You can now complete the application in Microsoft Word and submit by e-mail. New instructions for submitting your application fee are listed on Page 5.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGE YOU WILL ENCOUNTER:
Page 19 explains a change to the handling of commercial support for your activity. For all future CME activities, the AAAAI must submit all requests for commercial support to any potential sponsors. As the accreditor of your activity these grants are considered support to the Academy, and the AAAAI is responsible for appropriate management of these grants according to the ACCME's Standards for Commercial Support. An essential part of complying with these standards is the AAAAI administering the application process for any grants and the distribution of the funding. This will require more active contact between your design committee and Academy staff, and we are prepared to offer the support necessary for this change to be carried out smoothly.

We are making these changes not only to stay in compliance with our accreditation guidelines, but also to work with you to develop the highest quality education we can offer to the healthcare providers we serve. We take our CME Mission Statement (Page 3) and our Lifelong Learner Bill of Rights (Page 4) seriously, and look forward to collaborating with you to program a successful educational activity. Please note, though, that if we cannot assure that your activity was planned using the timelines and guidelines outlined in the application, we will not be able to provide credit to the participants in your activity.

If you have any questions about the requirements included in this new application please do not hesitate to call or write. You can contact either Denise Mueller, Education Coordinator, at dmueller@aaaai.org, or Steve Folstein, Director of Education, at sfolstein@aaaai.org. If you prefer, you can call either of us at (414) 272-6071.
