Associates to the AAAAI:
2006 Winter Newsletter
Helen Ownby, PhDWelcome to Miami Beach! - Helen Ownby, PhD
Plans are underway for an exciting few days for the Associates of the AAAAI. We are again sponsoring the “Not So Silent Auction” to raise funds for the Award of Excellence Scholarships and Awards of Merit. This is particularly important since our previous pharmaceutical partner has merged with another company and will no longer be supporting our program. Please plan to donate to either the Auction or directly to the Scholarship fund. If you would be interested in helping with the Auction, please contact Francine Lifson ( or Margaret Quel ( The Auction items will again be at the Convention Center during the days on Friday and Saturday, then be available for final bidding during our Sunday Breakfast and Business Meeting. To make donations to the auction or scholarship program contact John Augustyniak at the AAAAI executive office at (414) 272-6071.The Hospitality Suite will be located on the fourth level (Room 450) of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. This is a wonderful place to drop by and rest between other activities, to meet with friends, and serve as a “take-off” location for various activities. Trudy Green and her Hospitality Committee will be setting up displays from past meetings and providing you with information about things to do in the area. The suite is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Friday, March 3 through Tuesday, March 7.
The theme of our Sunday Breakfast and Business Meeting is “Beach Party, Fun in the Sun”. Wear your beach cover-ups, hats, and other beachwear. Prizes will be given for the best dressed members and guests. Throughout the morning we will be entertained by a Jazz Trio from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, while we eat breakfast, make our final bids on the Not So Silent Auction, and enjoy meeting old and new friends. The annual business meeting will also be held at 10am, at which time I will hand over the gavel to Frances Washburne, our President-elect. There will be a clown to entertain our younger guests, table prizes to take to the beach for adults and children alike, so put the Associates Breakfast on your calendar and come join the fun in the sun!
We are not the only ones in town that weekend. The 61st Miami International Orchid Show is also at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Friday and Saturday from 10a- 8pm and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Ride the same bus your spouse rides to the meeting from your hotel. AAAAI activities are in Exhibit Halls A and B, while the Orchid Show is in C! This is the largest exhibiting orchid show in the country and one of the most prestigious in the world, featuring more than 200 exhibitors from around the world selling and displaying more than 500,000 orchids. There are daily interactive demonstrations taught by the world’s leading orchid experts. Daily admission is $10.
Walk the Beach, Collect Shells, Relax in the Sun.... remember your sunscreen! Most Annual Meeting hotels have beach front access, plus there’s a newly constructed beach front boardwalk.
There are planned tours of the Everglades and self-guided tours for our enjoyment while our spouses attend the meetings. Come and enjoy the week!
I look forward to meeting you in Miami Beach.
