Associates to the AAAAI:
2005 Spring Newsletter

Helen Ownby, PhD

President’s Pen - Helen Ownby, PhD
I hope that you enjoyed your visit to San Antonio! The Associates “Not so Silent Auction” for the Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarships provided an additional $7000 for our Scholarship Program. A special thanks to Francene Lifson and all the Board members, past presidents, and everyone else who contributed items, worked our display in the Resource Center, and assisted Sunday morning with the Auction. We hope next years’ auction will be even bigger and better! With that in mind, start thinking about what you might be willing to donate!

Attendees at the Sunday Breakfast and Business Meeting were entertained by Manuel Vargas y su Mariachi Group. Senor Vargas is a Latin Grammy Award nominated artist who, with his group performed classic Mexican songs for us. Historian Ernest Pereyra presented a bit more about the city of San Antonio. Elaine Richheimer, our Vice President-Programs, deserved an extra “round of applause” for providing the entertainment. Look for some more information to be coming your way this summer regarding our program at the 2006 Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, FL.

For the first time this year, the times and locations of the Hospitality Suite, Breakfast, and Auction were printed on the back of your guest name badge! There was no reason to miss out on the food, entertainment, and auction!
Some of you may be wondering how you suddenly received this mailing from us. Basically, when you are registered as a guest for the AAAAI annual meeting, you become a member of the Associates! This registration not only allows you to go to the exhibits, but serves as your pass to use the Hospitality Suite and definitely take advantage of the Sunday Breakfast and Program. We are always looking for new members who wish to become active in the organization. You may or may not wish to serve on the Board, but perhaps you would like to contribute or bid on items in the Not-so-Silent Auction, or join us in the Hospitality Suite and welcome new Spouses and Friends, and work on the Breakfast.

In the next years, we hope to add some new programs, so if you have ideas or programs to share, please contact me (heownby@mindspring.com) or our Executive Director, John Augustyniak at the Associates Executive offices.

We are looking forward to meeting you all in Miami Beach next March.

Editors Perspective - Gloria Schellenberg, Associates Newsletter Editor
The Associates to the AAAAI consider the Newsletter as our link to inform the membership of ongoing projects and activities initiated by our organization.

In preparation for writing this column I had the opportunity to visit San Antonio, Texas, a vibrant city full of history, genuine old west culture and even a ghost at the Menger Hotel – which I might add is no tall tale!

From our hotel we had a stunning view of the Alamo and the spectular San Antonio skyline. At the “Market” we enjoyed regional food and experienced true Mexican hospitality and entertainment, not to mention the traditional Margarita. One evening we enjoyed San Antonio haute cuisine in a refurbished “Silo”.

And as friends and I were strolling along the famous “Riverwalk” with shops laden with fine art, collectibles, jewellery, western couture, desert grown flowers and unique food to tempt our credit cards, we realized that we had all met years ago through the AAAAI Associates.

This organization brings together people from across the USA and other parts of the globe, fostering camaraderie while working to enhance educational initiatives and fund scholarships for asthmatic students.
On leaving the Associates Hospitality Suite I was easdropping on an engaging conversation among great friends who had been strangers just days before. I smiled to myself as I remembered that was exactly how my wonderful associates’ friendships began.

Our next meeting will be in Florida. So come and discover Miami Beach, and make new friends. Join the AAAAI Associates.

2005 Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarship Program, A Great Success Once Again! - Virginia Fawcett, JD, Chair Scholarship Committee/Past President, Associates to the AAAAI

This year the Associates to the AAAAI honored 81 high school seniors with awards totaling $43,500. Thirty-nine of these students each received a $1,000 Award of Excellence scholarship. The remaining 42 honorees were presented $100 merit awards. This money will help these students with the costs of their post-secondary school education. Since 1999, the Associates have been involved in this special program that assists graduating students with asthma in furthering their educational dreams.

The $1,000 Tanner McQuiston Award of Excellence Scholarship was one of the 39 prizes awarded. This award honors the memory of Associates past Executive Director, Robin McQuiston Vail’s son. Tanner, who was diagnosed with asthma as a toddler, died in an automobile accident in 2000. This is the fifth year for this presentation.

A special thank you goes to our continued major educational grant donor, sanofi-aventis. We greatly appreciate the support this company has given us from the beginning of the program. We also wish to thank the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, the family of Tanner McQuiston, the Northwest Allergy and Asthma Center (Seattle, WA), and Mary Frick, a Past President and one of the Associates founders. In addition, we want to express appreciation to the many others that participated in the Associates’ Silent Auction and those who donated money to the scholarship fund. These combined efforts helped increase the scholarship dollars available for distribution this year.

Limited funds and the record number of applicants made this year’s selection process even more difficult. The Associates’ Board joins with me in thanking the other members of the Scholarship Committee. They are Associates President, Helen Ownby, PhD, Associates President-elect, Frances Washburne, and Past President, Margaret Charlesworth. We appreciate their dedication and many hours of reading and analyzing the scholarship applications.

Plans for the scholarship program in 2006 have already begun. Our ability to help more students with asthma is limited only by the amount of available funds. This exciting project can continue to grow with continued support from everyone in the allergy family.

Let me “E” You-The Email Revolution
As times changes, so does the way in which we communicate. We’ve gone from mail, to phone, to fax to email in what is really a small amount of time. The Associates in keeping with up to date communication vehicles is looking for our members email addresses.

The Associates to the AAAI would like to use email to get out time critical and “Hot Off The Press” information to our members in the most quick and efficient manner possible.

Please note it is the policy of the Associates not to sell either our mailing or email list to any parties for sales and or solicitation purposes.

Please complete the information form, and either fax (414.272.6070) the form or email us (jaugustyniak@aaaai.org) with your correct email, so that we may update our records.
